​Spelling Clouds® make the speech–print connection visible for all children. Easy to carry, display, or use at a desk.
For over ten years, hundreds of children in schools across Australia explored words to discover every possible spelling choice.
They mapped words to show the graphemes and thought carefully about the sounds.
Whenever they found a new spelling that appeared in at least two words, it was added to the collection. Miss Emma would then write them a poem to celebrate.
Some spellings are unique, found only in one word. These remain on the outside of the Spelling Cloud, such as the /wo/ in two or the /ach/ in yacht.
This is how the Spelling Clouds® grew, created through the curiosity and discoveries of children.
What are Spelling Clouds®?
Spelling Clouds® make the sounds of English visible. Each cloud shows a speech sound with its common and less common spellings. The most frequent spellings are shown around the outside with a simple visual prompt. Less common spellings are placed inside the cloud. At the top you will always see an example word.
The Phonemies Family of Speech Sound Monsters® are used instead of phonetic symbols or mouth pictures. Every sound has its own friendly character, making it easy for children to recognise, remember, and use. Letters on their own do not represent sounds until they appear in words. Spelling Clouds® bridge that gap and give children the full picture of the code.
